ANDREA GARCIA

URBAN WEAVES
“Andrea Garcia uses items considered waste to extract its inherent value, which has been buried by use and time in them. The artist assigns a proper and worth use to elements that society rejects, this transformation has a role in both the artistic and social context.
Andrea García's work could not be more accurate in its contents and reflections. Her work is simultaneously original and ambitious, and moves, as it corresponds artistically in this century, between the coordinates of the aesthetic and the sociological. Aesthetically each work implies considerations of scale, weight, materials, color, texture etc., to form a harmonious and attractive whole. It is also formally original in its execution and the result reflects the other part of her work, its content.
Garcia is an innate weaver and her cross-linking of threads results in a textile whose wefts and warps, coated with gold, silver, or copper foil, illuminate themselves by the inherent luster of casted leaf, while falling fluidly over some obstacles that presents it’s three-dimensionality. The weaves of waste materials on the other hand, especially those made of plastic, remain static on the walls or arranged in the manner of sculptures, becoming true concentrations of luster, in tractive swarms of lights and reflections.
Her work is visually seductive, conceptually restless and, most importantly, deeply pertinent in her purpose of raising awareness not only about the environmental and the social damage that the consumer society involve, but also about the possible utilitarian prolongation of waste and its creative possibilities. For the artist, waste is a reflection of our social networks and therefore, perfectly transformable”.

BETWEEN TUBES
"With the piece of work Between-Pipes, Andrea Garcia reiterates the social background that permeates her entire work. The concept are pipes, those that are used in homes from all the social strata which confer to this jobs a certain democratic character and which are covered with gold leaf ennobling its function, bringing out its important task in daily life and simultaneously inserting its role in the expanded field of sculpture when it comes to resort to the own hybridization of a global world and taking advantage of the different means that this development has put into the artists service.
TREASURES
"The title of this work, Treasures, clearly talks of something worthy of a special value and that generally remains protected to ensure its survival. This is the reason why this work initiates with a safe box in which valuable objects are stored, but she choose to store not metals or precious objects, but materials that, just like fused light bulbs and beer can rings or pop tops, constitute a real fortune for that who knows to imbue them with a particular philosophy to transform them; from waste into pieces of art"
THE GOLDEN OF TODAY
“If yesterday’s golden years were constituted basically by gold, a precious material, Today’s Golden years are conformed by stones and logs, that ergo, by the organic and inorganic nature that each day seems more limited in the walks of life facing a flood of the artificial. The metaphor that Andrea Garcia produces covering with gold leaf the elements mentioned constitute a timely reminder which humans are an integral part of nature, and also a vehement call to all the art circuits to renovate the balance between man and their environment”.
EXTRAVAGANCES OF A MISCELLANEOUS
“Miscellanies are known by the heterogeneity of its products in which often figure the most extravagant objects, and due to this exact characteristic this works refer to conform some sort of flies installation, but flies made of plastic laminated in gold leaf and the air crafts laminated in silver leaf, which bring to those objects the possibility of two meanings or looks, one as a commercial resource to wake up the compulsive shopping disorder, characteristic of a consumer society, and the other one, Andrea Garcia’s, artistic resource that allows to imbue ordinary objects with a special symbolism and “transfigure them” into works of art”
COMMUNITY
“A community is often conformed by a group of people that share certain characteristics or interests, but in the case this piece of work refers more to a community of thoughts, since its about a installation composed by old radiators that constitute a group itself, but that it only acquires its own meaning and artistic value when the community conscience interrogates the condition of radiator’s as waste, its origin and its new meaning”.
ORIGIN
“In this work that the artist has called Origin, alludes not only to the beginning of her sculptural expression, but also of her ecologic and social reasoning. The pieces sprout and meddle into the space leading to reflections such as the materials rehabilitation and its formal approaches”.
CATALYSIS
“The catalysts functions of radiators impulse Andrea to give them an artistic sense, polishing and sculpturing them so they can visually transmit the diagram of word in which people “get away” or escape from situations or adverse conditions, just like the heat escaped through the radiators in the original function of this elements”.
RADIO-GRAPHIES
" The catalytic functions of the radiators prompted Andrea to give them an artistic sense, polishing and sculpting them so that they visually convey the diagram of the words with which people "flee", or escape from adverse situations or conditions, like heat. leaked through the radiators in the original function of these elements."

FUGUES
“… in order to keep performing our catalyst role in a group, the body release fugues of energy. Inevitably the deterioration is seen in the tissue, since its use and pass of time, but these fugues are what allow us to keep on going.
FROM ALUMINUM TO JEWELS
“The proposal for the XV Venice Biennale of Bogota reassigns the symbols of femininity, through the creation of objects that embellish the celebration of fifteen years. The objects were intervened with recycled material developing a particular esthetic facing the symbol they represent, turning them into icons, jewels and sumptuary objects. An initiative aligned to the contemporary issues such as recycling and social responsibility.
BLOSSOMING OF AN OBJECT
"The first steps in developing her artistic work is made from a plastic object (holder of the beverage), through which unfolding layers an image is generated. Garcia attempts to understand the workings of the gaze and observation. This gives rise to Blooming of an Object (2008): through the overlaying of translucent images the artist wants to question what we see on waste material. The image consists of different layers and therefore of different figures until the original object becomes unrecognizable. This first experiment establishes the desire to give another meaning to that which has lost its original function. This way begins a study with various materials to understand all the possibilities hidden in each one, having come to an end in the course of consumer society today".
PROYECTO AMOR
Proyecto Amor makes the sound wave of the word "love" available to everyone to generate an urban fabric that connects people with a common intention. The intention is to surround the world with love from the intervention of an image, object and/or space evidenciándolos in a "fabric of love". At the same time, he questions the "love" from its form and its background
Andrea has been working with sound waves of sounds and words for more than 10 years, capturing her intention and evidencing her form. The objective, capture its intention and materialize its form. The inspiration for the project comes from the philosopher behind the water messages by Masaru Emoto who scientifically proves that the power of thought changes matter.
Parallel to this project, Andrea works with recycling and its transformation and believes that @proyectoamor___ is a similar project but much more ambitious because there is not only a material transformation... but also a spiritual transformation.
